Bible Garden

An almond tree was planted by the Bible Class on 23rd May 2004, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of laying the foundation stone for the present church building, in a dedication service lead by Mr Ian Smith.

At that time the garden area was overgrown with weeds and very few plants, so it was decided to try and reclaim it as a garden.

Once this was achieved we decided to try and turn it into a Bible Garden with plants mentioned in, or associated with, the Bible as well as plants and flowers found in the Holy Land.

Although this will obviously be an on-going project we wanted to at least have the Bible Garden started to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the church.

We have listed some of the main examples we have so far planted on the bible plants page and , although only a short list at present, hopefully as the years go by what has already been planted will flourish and be added to, as will the congregation and work of The Old Parish Church.
We discovered an old pathway into the church while trying to find out why the grass would not grow!  There is a wonderful poem by Robert Frost that tells of the need to follow the pathway (go to garden poems).

We also hope to erect a sign that signifies the gifts found in a garden.

Dorothy was the daughter of Frederick Blomfield, Rector at St. Andrew’s Undershaft in London. She married Gerald Gurney (a some time actor) in 1897. Her husband was originally an Anglican priest, but they both joined the Roman Catholic church in 1919. Dorothy is perhaps best known for her poem “God’s Garden,” source of the verse often seen on garden signs:

This sign can be seen on the gate of the beautiful Ballindalloch Castle Rose Gardens.

It is also seen on a granite stone in the walled Gardens at Kailzie Gardens, near Peebles
