Senior Ladies

An interdenominational group of some 100 ladies meet once a fortnight on a Monday afternoon. A varied syllabus engenders a lively ecumenical fellowship which is much appreciated. Two trips are arranged every  session, and once a year a concert is provided for and well-supported by the public of Peterhead. The latest innovation is an interdenominational Christmas Carol Praise in the Church.

It is with gratitude that we look back at the happy and friendly session which has just ended. The Scottish Afternoon on February 4th brought much joy. Contributing to this were the Cruden Singers, Mrs. Babs Noble and Mr. William Morgan and an item which was certainly a surprise when Mrs.Vi Mann brought a hush to the proceedings with a most beautiful solo sung in Gaelic.

On February 18th Mr. Ben Ritchie along with his mother Mrs.Anne Ritchie told how the Solid Rock Café in Fraserburgh began. This charming young man has a deep burning desire to obey the work God has called him to – working with drug addicts. His Mother from the beginning has been a tireless worker along with him. We wish them every blessing on all they do to help those who cannot help themselves.

The Rev.Sheila Craggs spoke to us on March 3rd about her time as a Minister in New Orleans. Being part of the Church Float at the Mardi Gras celebrations was a wonderful experience. We were shown colourful outfits, hats and jewellery. She ended her talk by singing the Benediction. Possessed of a beautiful voice she will be an ideal guest soloist at our Christmas Praise.

On March 10th we had a never to be forgotten visit from the Inverurie Glee Club. Eight gentlemen, one pianist and a compere,  who was one of the well-known Beechgrove Garden Team - Mr Jim McColl, he also played the accordion. Singing, readings, and guitar music stories – we had them all. It was an afternoon with laughter at the forefront.

Mrs. June Filby of the Salvation Army was the speaker on March 24th. Her unusual start was a form of Twenty Questions so that we would get to know her better. Her message was centered around the I AM sayings of Jesus, ending with I AM THE RESURRECTION and that meant the empty Cross. Another lady with a gift for singing!

The Rev.Ian and Mrs. Anthea McNee on April 7th shared with us their visit to Kenya. The troubles there caused some cancellations, but they visited an orphanage and hospital. A Male Voice Choir of Elders and a group of recovering Alcoholics sang to them. The country was in part very poor with a lot of displaced families in great need. The Music was provided by Rev. Ian who sang two solos accompanying himself on the piano.

The last Meeting of the session was our Spring Tea. Our enthusiastic Senior Ladies Singers supplied the programme. The first half comprised fairly old, but well-known songs, humorous readings and a selection of Nursery Rhymes brought childhood memories back. After a delicious tea the songs were in the Gospel vein, starting with `God’s Choir in the Sky`, more readings, a playlet with a message, and ending with `We’ll talk it over`.

Readers will realize that a vast amount of work goes into the organizing and running of the Fellowship and we record our thanks to Mrs. Allen and her faithful committee. The next session starts on September 8th with a Welcome Service in the Church. As ever we extend an invitation to join us to all senior Ladies.
