Girls Brigade

The 1st Peterhead Girls Brigade recently celebrated it's 25th anniversary.  The company marked the occasion during its Christmas party and a special birthday cake was cut by Olive McRobbie who, along with Rev Dr David Ross, founded the local Girls Brigade company.  The 1st Peterhead Girls Brigade currently boasts 14 explorers, 14 juniors, five Brigaders and six officers.  It meets every Monday evening in the Old Parish Church Hall from 6pm, and girls from Primary 1 upwards are welcome to join the fun.

Magazine Article (September 2007)

It hardly seems more than a couple of weeks since we held our open night but the new session for the 1st Peterhead Girls’ Brigade begins on Monday 27th August at 6pm with enrolment for girls wishing to join the company.

The Brigade has three sections – Explorers aged 5 to 7 who meet from 6pm till 7pm,  the Junior section for girls aged 8 to 11 and the Brigader section for girls of 12 and upwards.  Juniors and Brigaders meet from 6pm till 7.30pm.

Each section has its own list of subjects to follow.  The Explorers choose a theme each year, for example Colours, Shapes etc and learn about these through a variety of games, stories and activities.  Juniors and Brigaders follow a topic from each of the four sections of their handbooks - Physical, Spiritual, Educational and Service – and take on new challenges as they work towards gaining badges.  These are awarded at the annual open night when girls – and officers! – get a chance to show mum /dads /grannys /granddads what they have been doing throughout the year.  Brigaders can also work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

During the year we also take part in competitions or activities with other companies who make up the Buchan Division of the Girls’ Brigade, giving girls the opportunity to meet and make friends with girls from other companies.

Come along and have fun and make new friends - we look forward to welcoming any new members on Monday 27th, as well as welcoming back the girls from last year.

Magazine Article (June 2006) -GIRLS’ BRIGADE

The Girls’ Brigade has been busy since the last magazine, finishing off badge work and taking part in the Division competitions at Fraserburgh.  Unfortunately we didn’t win any of the competition sections this year.  1st Ellon Company swept the board in fact – well done to them!

Easter holidays and local holidays tend to disrupt our Monday nights at the beginning of the year however badge work was eventually finished and we had our Open night on 22nd May.  It was well attended by parents and the girls entertained them with songs and dances from the competitions as well as others they have done throughout the year.  The Brigaders also did a sketch about using your talents, featuring Ma’am, Tam, Duck and Harry-et.  At the end of the evening, girls were presented with their badges by Mrs Olive McRobbie.  Darcy and Alison also received certificates for the Leadership training and the Company shield was awarded this year to Kirsten Fraser.

In between all the work we also had a day out at when we went ten-pin bowling at Macduff.  Lorna’s team finished with the highest score and the wooden spoon was awarded to Sylvia for the lowest score of the afternoon!  After the bowling we had a meal before heading the play park in Aden Park for an hour, arriving back at the Church just before 6pm.

As a final part of their badge work, the Brigaders helped organise a coffee morning held in the Church hall for Christian Aid, raising £80.  Thanks to those who came along and supported them.

Brigade starts again after the summer holidays on Monday 28th August at the usual time of 6pm.  All girls of school age are welcome to come along.  The officers will be starting a day earlier with a Divisional training day on 27th August, when Sylvia will also start her term as Commissioner for Buchan Division on top of her role as Captain of 1st Peterhead.

We hope all the girls enjoy the summer break and look forward to seeing them again on 28th August.
